Dos
  • Smile when meeting people. Malaysians are renowned for their sunny personalities. Reciprocating their warmth will be appreciated.
  • Dress appropriately. Malaysians are generally accepting of hot pants, slippers and tank tops, but in the right locations and on the right occasions.
  • Shake hands with men when greeting them, but not women unless they offer to do so first.
  • Do remove your shoes when entering homes in Malaysian homes. This is fairly common in most African and Asian countries. It’s a sign of respect.
  • Do use your right hand to receive or give something. The right hand should also be used for eating. It is considered discourteous in Malay custom to use your left hand when you hand over or receive things.
  • Do use all four things on either hand when pointing at people, places or objects. It is considered rude to use the forefinger on the right hand to point at people or things.
Don’ts
  • Do not take pictures of people unless you ask first.
  • No need to give tips in restaurants as service is applied to the receipt as is a government tax.
  • Do not publicly humiliate anyone. This action directly conflicts with cultural principles of respect and is likely to make a Malaysian think less of you.
  • Do not criticise Malaysia or the Malay royal family. A Malaysian may do so themselves, but it is best to listen to their opinion without indicating agreement or disagreement.
  • Do not wear hot pants and vests at mainland beaches if you are female. Topless sunbathing is a not allowed. Malay women usually go swimming fully dressed and some keep their scarves on.
  • Do not kiss in public. Public behaviour is important in Malaysian culture. Most Malaysians refrain from displaying affection such as embracing or kissing in public.
  • Do not drink alcohol in public. The country’s large Muslim population is forbidden by law to consume alcohol.
  • Don’t attempt to bring drugs into the country. The law are hash when it comes to punishment as in there is a death penalty drug trafficking. If you are in possession of 200g of Marijuana, this is considered trafficking. Unless you want to do 10 years or even death I would recommend staying away from this. Also make sure you are not bringing in oils derived from Cannabis.
